Of all of the Polynesian cultures, the Hawaiians are known for their beautiful feather work which is seen in the lei, capes, clothing and helmets.
Carol Makani Wong has been creating both Traditional and Contemporary Lei since 1999 and in 2007 has been given permission to teach by her na kumu. Carol teaches at her home in Murrieta, CA but is willing to travel to teach others.
The Traditional Lei — Feathers are indivdually wili or tied to a central cord or yarn. Prices vary between the different styles (i.e. lei poe poe, kamoe) and range between $160.00 to $220.00 and up. Doule lei kamoe starts at $295.00 and up depending on length and size.
Contemporary Lei — Feathers are sewn individually onto a felt backing. Price range for this style lei ranges between $245.00 to $425.00 depending on type of feathers used (i.e. goose or pheasant or combination of both) and style. Price range for the Peacock Contemporary Lei is between $675.00 to $875.00 depending on which feathers are used and band width.
